Following on from a very healthy win at home last week against Spartak,  Histon Hornets U10 may well have felt justifiably confident for the first away fixture of the season. However, today’s opponents Haslingfield U10 had other ideas.

From the opening few minutes of the game, it became clear that Histon were in for a hard game. Haslingfield were first to the ball, pressurised the Histon players into mistakes and picked up every loose ball.

Initially, Histon held up well to the team in blue and black stripes. Though it wasn’t to last long before the pressure began to tell. Some precise passing and good movement around Histon’s defence, gave Haslingfield’s number seven the opportunity to score a simple tap in for the home team.

As the half time whistle blew Histon Hornets found themselves behind. Haslingfield’s half-time tally included a stunning strike from the number 10, who scored from a yard or two from inside his own half. Clearly Haslingfield had a very good half and were looking for more goals as the second half kicked off.
The second half followed the same pattern as the first, with Haslingfield pressing and looking to move the ball quickly forward at every opportunity. Unsurprisingly, as Histon pressed further up the pitch to get back in the game, Haslingfield found more space and scored a few more goals.  By the time the final whistle blew, Haslingfield had secured a well deserved victory.

Both teams were a credit to their clubs, playing the game positively and in the right spirit. Histon Hornets at no point allowed the result to get the better of them and kept trying to press for a consolation goal right up until the final whistle. For all the effort Histon Hornets U10 came away from the match empty handed, though they can have no complaints as they were outplayed on the day by an impressive Haslingfield team.
