On a windy, rain-swept and chilly Saturday morning the Histon Hornets U10 (Blue), welcomed Newmarket Town Youth to the recreation ground. The away game at Newmarket between these two sides was a great nip and tuck affair, with Newmarket slotting in a cheeky late winner. So today’s game between the evenly matched sides in such challenging conditions was eagerly anticipated.
Right from the first whistle, and kicking against the wind, the Histon boys had one thing in mind; to attack the Newmarket goal. So it was no surprise to see Histon go one up in the first few minutes. However, this spurred on Newmarket to push forward with gusto, though they were thwarted on numerous occasions by stoic Histon defending. As the first half drew to a close Histon found themselves with a deserved but narrow lead.
At the start of the second half, the Histon boys pushed on with wave after wave of attacks on the Newmarket goal. So much so that the boys forced a sequence of six or seven corners in a row. Sadly for Newmarket the pressure began to tell, with the Histon boys scoring goals at regular intervals. The Newmarket boys always presented a threat, but the Histon defence held firm.
At the final whistle Histon Hornets team ran out deserved winners, with hot shot Alfie scoring a well deserved hat trick. Credit goes to both teams, the coaches and the referee for their support and performance on the day in challenging conditions. Just left to warm up the blue fingers and to keep the big smiles.
